‘Medium’ Recap: ‘Then… And Again’
Posted by: | CommentsThis week of “Medium” was supposed to be a continuation of last week, which feels very odd once the omg-Ariel-is-missing storyline wraps up in the first five minutes. That’s the only reason they had a ‘to be continued’ note last week? Really? Unless Ariel is dead on the side of the street somewhere, or kidnapped, that seems an unnecessary bit of melodrama. Something about this episode seemed sleepy all around, except for one very tense scene that didn’t even happen thanks to mad time traveling. Peggy Sue Got Married meets “Medium!” Wonderful.
Allison has a dream that Ariel and Joe have a car accident on the way home. They are screaming at one another because he went to the mountain and forced her home. This is a huge red herring since they do not get in any kind of accident, nor does it tie in to the rest of the show really. Perhaps it just goes to prove that even Allison can have normal nightmares too. It is their youngest daughter Marie’s fifth birthday, and she’s by far the cutest of the kids, so Bridgette has to jealousy taunt her about how she was born broken. Aw, sibling love. Apparently Allison got in a car accident when she was very pregnant with Marie, but Joe assures their sweetest child she is perfectly fine. This story is just a plot device for what happens in a few minutes, so way to tell rather than show, writers.
Allison goes to Devalos’ house early to drop off some papers, and there’s a lunatic there with a gun. He claims Devalos took five years of his life away, and then he shoots him three times in the chest. Then as Allison cries and begs, he shoots her as well. That was by far the most intense and well done moment of the episode, even if everyone knew they would turn out fine by the end. Allison wakes up in her car, pregnant and in an accident, and yes it is five years earlier during Joe’s story. Funny how that comes together so nicely, right?
The best thing about this episode is serving to remind us how far the people in Allison’s life have come. She hasn’t been a psychic her whole life, nor was she exactly when Joe first married her. When she starts babbling at him about traveling from the future, he is weirded out beyond belief. While Joe, Scanlon, and Devalos often question Allison during cases in modern day, they flat out think she’s crazy in the past. Joe wants to take her back to the hospital. She sees on the TV that Devalos is putting away the man (Nathan) that eventually shoots them, and she has a vision that someone else murdered his wife. He is innocent after all! She tries to call Scanlon and convince him of this, but he understandably thinks she’s a nut job. Then she shows up at Devalos’ favorite lunch spot, but he doesn’t believe her either. Scanlon had sent a car to where Allison said the woman’s body was, and when they found it, they actually arrest her!
Allison realizes it was his attorney that killed his wife, the same man who convinced him to plead guilty and go to jail, and when she goes into labor she wakes back up in 2009. She manages to get to Devalos’ house early and convince him of the truth. They confront Nathan and tell him the truth of what happened, and he forgives Devalos rather than shoots him. Case solved. The episode was a little boring at times, but I’m not going to get mad at Devalos, Joe, and Scanlon for questioning her anymore. They could be much worse!
